“Project Hail Mary” continued its strong box office performance, bringing in $54.5 million in its second weekend and maintaining the top spot in North America. The sci-fi film, directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller and starring Ryan Gosling, has now grossed $300.8 million worldwide in just two weeks.
The film’s 32% drop from its opening weekend signals sustained audience interest, particularly for a non-franchise release. With a production budget near $200 million, the movie has benefited from minimal direct competition and continued access to premium large-format screens. Its performance has outpaced comparable second-weekend numbers for recent major releases, reinforcing its status as one of the year’s top theatrical successes.
In contrast, the weekend’s top new release, “They Will Kill You,” opened to $5 million domestically for Warner Bros. The R-rated horror film, starring Zazie Beetz, follows a woman who takes a job at an apartment complex with a dark and deadly secret. Despite its relatively modest $20 million budget, the debut fell short of expectations.
Industry analysts point to a crowded horror market as a contributing factor. The genre has seen a steady stream of releases in recent months, with a new horror film arriving in theaters nearly every weekend. Recent entries include “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come,” which has earned $16.3 million domestically, and IFC’s “Forbidden Fruits,” which debuted this weekend with $1.2 million.
While horror films remain cost-effective and generally popular with audiences, projections indicate a potential decline in overall revenue for the genre in 2026 compared to the previous year. Analysts suggest that market saturation may be limiting the performance of newer releases.
Elsewhere, family-oriented films continued to show stability. Pixar’s “Hoppers” held the No. 2 position with $12.2 million in its fourth weekend, pushing its global total to $297.6 million. However, it is expected to face significant competition in the coming weeks with the anticipated release of “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.”
The current box office landscape highlights a mix of strong performances from established titles and challenges for new entrants, particularly in crowded genres.
