Rep. Tim Burchett said Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell and his advisers are blocking the SAVE Act from being brought to a vote on the Senate floor. The legislation would require voters to present identification at the polls.
Burchett, speaking in public remarks, said the measure has widespread support, citing polls showing over 80% of Americans back voter ID requirements. He accused McConnell, who led the Senate Republican Conference from 2007 to 2025, of prioritizing the interests of his handlers and major donors over what Burchett described as fair elections.
The SAVE Act has been promoted by President Trump and dozens of Republican lawmakers as a way to strengthen election security, though critics have argued such measures can suppress voter participation. Burchett’s comments framed the delay as a deliberate effort by Senate leadership to prevent the bill from reaching the floor for consideration.
The legislation’s status and whether McConnell or Senate leadership will take further action remain unclear.
