Rep. Tim Burchett warned that U.S. military action in Iran could spiral into a prolonged conflict, telling voters, including supporters of President Donald Trump, to remain vigilant and hold elected officials accountable.
Burchett made the remarks when asked what message he had for Trump supporters concerned that the Iran operation could expand beyond its initial scope.
“I would say stay concerned,” Burchett said. “Be vigilant. Hold our feet to the fire. Keep us honest on that issue.”
Pressed on whether that scrutiny should apply even when decisions come directly from Trump, Burchett replied, “Absolutely, ma’am. Nobody’s above reproach,” before joking, “Just don’t tell the president I said that.”
The comments come as lawmakers from both parties, shaped by the long wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, weigh the risks of another extended U.S. military engagement in the Middle East. Trump has suggested U.S. strikes in Iran could last anywhere from a week to a month, while also signaling the United States has the capacity to sustain operations if necessary.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said U.S. munitions stockpiles at medium and upper-medium levels “have never been higher or better,” adding that wars can be fought “forever” using existing supplies. He noted that while high-end weapons inventories are strong, additional advanced weaponry is stored abroad.
A small but vocal group of conservative Republicans aligned with the Make America Great Again movement has expressed concern about escalation. Reps. Thomas Massie and Warren Davidson are backing an effort to force a House vote aimed at reasserting congressional authority over war powers. Most Republicans, however, have defended Trump’s actions as necessary for U.S. national security.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also pushed back on fears of an open-ended campaign, arguing that Iran’s regime is currently at its weakest point in decades.
Burchett separately took aim at Sen. Lindsey Graham after Graham suggested stronger military responses elsewhere in the region. “Lindsey hasn’t seen a fist fight he hasn’t wanted to turn into a bombing raid,” Burchett said, dismissing the remarks as typical hawkish rhetoric.
