Rep. Randy Fine (R-FL) is calling for federal intervention after Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl LVIII halftime performance Sunday, arguing the show included content that would be illegal on live television if performed in English.
In posts on X on Monday, Fine described the performance as “disgusting” and “illegal,” noting the explicit sexual content and frequent use of profanity. “You can’t say the f-word on live TV,” he wrote.
Fine emphasized that language or culture should not create exceptions for broadcast standards. “Puerto Ricans are Americans, and we all live by the same rules,” he said, highlighting the double standard he sees between English- and Spanish-language broadcasts.
The congressman announced that he and other officials are sending a letter to Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr requesting “dramatic action” against the NFL, NBC, and Bad Bunny. Proposed measures include fines and reviews of broadcast licenses. Fine stressed the severity of the offense, saying that if the lyrics had been in English, “the broadcast would have been pulled down and the fines would have been enormous.”
Bad Bunny’s halftime set, performed almost entirely in Spanish, featured sexually explicit lyrics and provocative dancing. Fine shared selections of the lyrics on social media, calling them “pornographic filth” and urging regulators to hold all parties accountable.
The request signals a broader push by some Republican lawmakers to enforce consistent standards on live broadcasts, particularly during high-profile events with national audiences.
