Danise Baird, the wife of Indiana Republican Rep. Jim Baird, has died due to complications stemming from injuries she sustained in a car crash earlier this year, the congressman’s office announced Sunday.
According to a statement released by the office, the Bairds were married for 59 years and built their life around faith, family, and public service. The statement described Danise Baird as a devoted wife and mother of three who served as the foundation of their family. The congressman’s office asked supporters to keep the family in prayer during what it called a difficult time.
The couple was hospitalized in January after their vehicle was struck in what President Donald Trump characterized at the time as a “bad accident.” Specific details about the collision, including the location and the severity of the injuries sustained, were not publicly disclosed.
Roughly one week after the crash, Rep. Baird indicated that he and his wife had been released from the hospital and were continuing their recovery. No further medical updates were provided at that time, and the extent of the lingering injuries was not made public.
Rep. Baird, a Vietnam War veteran and former Indiana state lawmaker, has represented Indiana’s 4th Congressional District since 2019. Friends and colleagues have described the couple’s nearly six-decade marriage as a testament to their enduring commitment to faith, family, and service to the country.
