Former MMA champions Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano will come out of retirement to compete in a high-profile featherweight fight on May 16 at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California. The bout, set for five rounds of five minutes each with four-ounce gloves, will be broadcast live by Netflix.
Rousey, 39, retired in 2016 with a 12-2 record after consecutive knockout losses, while Carano, 43, stepped away in 2019 with a 7-1 record and pursued an acting career. Both fighters expressed respect for each other and excitement over the matchup.
“Been waiting so long to announce this: Me and Gina Carano are gonna throw down in the biggest super fight in women’s combat sport history!” Rousey said, noting a partnership with fighter-first promotion MVP and Netflix. Carano called the opportunity “an honor” and indicated she expects a tough fight.
Rousey was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2018 and has spoken publicly about the long-term effects of concussions, which contributed to her initial retirement. She emphasized the cumulative neurological injuries common in combat sports and the challenges fighters face as they age.
The event signals a major crossover for MMA and streaming media, with both retired champions returning to the octagon in a fight anticipated to draw significant attention from fans and the broader combat sports community.
