Russian forces have markedly increased the tempo of their military operations in Ukraine, signaling the start of an anticipated spring offensive. Ukrainian military leaders confirmed that Moscow launched nearly 400 long-range drones overnight into Sunday, along with 23 cruise missiles and seven ballistic missiles targeting at least 10 locations across seven cities. The barrage, the largest in recent weeks, struck civilian areas including Kyiv and Lviv, killing six people and injuring at least 46 others.
Ukrainian General Oleksandr Syrskyi stated that the attacks, combined with 619 ground assaults over four days along the 1,250-kilometer front line, indicate Russia has begun its seasonal push. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) echoed this assessment, noting intensified mechanized and motorized assaults targeting Ukraine's 'Fortress Belt' of defended cities in eastern Donetsk Oblast.
Primary efforts focused on the Pokrovsk, Kostyantynivka, and Slovyansk directions. Russian troops executed a battalion-sized assault northeast of Sloviansk and smaller attacks near Pokrovsk and Kostyantynivka, aiming to disrupt Ukrainian formations and exploit vulnerabilities. Over the past week, Russia conducted more than 600 assaults, including 163 near Pokrovsk and 84 near Kostyantynivka. Earlier in March, Russian forces claimed control of 12 settlements as part of a broader push.
Despite the surge, ISW reported no confirmed Russian territorial advances on March 27 or 28. Operations continued in northern Kharkiv Oblast near Starytsya and Vovchanski Khutory, and in Donetsk areas like Lyman, Hryshyne, and Bilytske, but Ukrainian defenders held positions. Russian tactics included weather-dependent infiltrations using small groups on motorcycles and foot, supported by smoke screens and drones from units like Akhmat Spetsnaz.
Ukraine responded aggressively with long-range strikes on Russian oil infrastructure, halting operations at ports like Primorsk and Ust-Luga and damaging refineries, which disrupted at least 40% of Russia's oil export capacity. Mid- and short-range attacks targeted Russian troop concentrations, command posts, and depots in occupied territories.
The escalation coincides with stalled U.S.-backed peace talks. Russia has demanded that Ukraine relinquish the Donetsk Fortress Belt cities for any agreement, complicating negotiations amid distractions like the Middle East conflict. Analysts assess that while Russia maintains pressure, breakthroughs remain unlikely this year due to Ukrainian innovations in drones and defenses.
Drones have transformed the battlefield, enabling precise strikes and complicating Russian advances, which have averaged just 15 to 70 meters per day in key sectors. Both sides continue to suffer heavy losses in this grinding war of attrition.
