At least 10 people, including two children, died when a Russian ballistic missile struck a five-story apartment building in Kharkiv early Saturday. Fifteen others were wounded, among them children, as rescuers combed through rubble for additional victims.
Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov confirmed the direct hit on the residential structure in the city's Kyivskyi district, noting that a primary schoolteacher and her nine-year-old son, as well as a 13-year-old girl and her mother, were among those killed. Regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov reported damage to 19 residential buildings, commercial properties, administrative structures, and electricity lines in the area. Fires broke out following the impact, requiring emergency services to battle blazes while conducting searches.
The Kharkiv strike formed part of a larger Russian assault involving nearly 480 drones and 29 missiles launched overnight across Ukraine. Ukraine's air force said it downed 453 drones and 19 missiles, but nine missiles and 26 drones struck 22 targets nationwide. Attacks damaged energy facilities, railways, and port infrastructure, including massive fires at sites in the Odesa region and power outages affecting thousands of homes in Kyiv.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the barrage, stating, "There should be a response from partners to these savage strikes against life." He added, "Russia has not abandoned its attempts to destroy Ukraine's residential and critical infrastructure, and therefore support should continue." Zelenskyy called for bolstered air defenses and weapons supplies from allies.
The assault followed a period of relative calm in Russian strikes, heightening fears among Ukrainians of renewed intensity. Kharkiv, just 30 kilometers from the Russian border, has endured frequent attacks since Moscow's full-scale invasion began in February 2022. Saturday's incident underscored the vulnerability of civilian areas despite Ukrainian air defenses intercepting most incoming threats.
