Russian drone strikes killed at least two people and wounded two others in the Ukrainian Black Sea port city of Odesa overnight into Saturday.
The attacks targeted residential areas, damaging apartment buildings, houses, and a kindergarten, local authorities reported. Ukraine's Air Force said Russia launched 160 drones overnight across the country, with 133 intercepted or shot down.
The strikes occurred hours before a 32-hour Orthodox Easter ceasefire declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin was set to begin at 4 p.m. Moscow time (1 p.m. EDT) Saturday and run until midnight Sunday. Putin announced the pause on Thursday, expecting Ukraine to reciprocate, following repeated Ukrainian proposals for Easter halts in fighting.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed Ukraine would honor the ceasefire but warned of strict responses to violations. "Easter should be a time of silence and safety. A ceasefire at Easter could also become the beginning of real movement toward peace," he said. "We all understand who we are dealing with. Ukraine will adhere to the ceasefire and respond strictly in kind."
Earlier Saturday, Russia and Ukraine completed a prisoner exchange, with each side receiving 175 soldiers and Ukraine getting seven additional civilians, many captured since 2022, Zelenskyy said.
Ukraine has accused Russia of continuing drone strikes despite the truce announcement, with a communications officer from the 148th Separate Artillery Brigade stating, "The ceasefire is not being observed by the Russian side." The Kremlin instructed its forces to halt operations but remain ready for provocations.
Odesa, a key Ukrainian export hub, has faced repeated Russian attacks targeting its port and energy infrastructure amid the war now in its third year. A similar Easter truce last year also saw mutual accusations of breaches.
The latest strikes follow a Russian drone attack on April 6 that killed three people, including a two-year-old child, and wounded 16 others in Odesa.
