A courthouse in downtown Salt Lake City was evacuated Wednesday after officials received a suspicious letter containing a white powdery substance and vague bomb threats, prompting a large emergency response before authorities ultimately determined the threat was a hoax.
The incident occurred at the John L. Baxter Courthouse, also known as the Salt Lake City Justice Courthouse. Authorities said the report came in shortly after the letter was discovered inside the building.
According to Sgt. Gregory Wilking of the Salt Lake City Police Department and courthouse staff received a letter that contained a white powdery substance along with language interpreted as vague bomb threats.
The discovery prompted emergency procedures at the courthouse. Some individuals were evacuated from the building while others were instructed to shelter in place as authorities assessed the situation.
Hazardous materials teams were called to the scene to evaluate the substance and ensure there was no immediate danger to those inside the courthouse or nearby areas.
After the investigation, authorities cleared the courthouse and determined the threat was a hoax. No injuries were reported during the incident.
Officials did not immediately release additional details about the contents of the letter or the identity of the person responsible.
