Today show co-host Savannah Guthrie released an emotional video Wednesday night alongside her siblings, pleading for the safe return of her 84-year-old mother Nancy Guthrie, who police say was abducted from her Arizona home last weekend. Savannah told anyone holding her mother that the family is “ready to talk” while stressing they need undeniable proof Nancy is alive amid reports of ransom demands.
In the Instagram video, Savannah addressed the reported ransom notes received by TMZ and KGUN 9 demanding millions in Bitcoin, saying: “However, we live in a world where voices and images are easily manipulated. We need to know, without a doubt, that she is alive and that you have her.”
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed Tuesday that Nancy was abducted, emphasizing she “did not leave on her own” and that “time is very critical” due to her need for daily medication. Nanos said his office is “aware” of the reported notes and is “taking all tips and leads very seriously,” though police have not confirmed their authenticity.
President Donald Trump announced Wednesday night he spoke with Savannah and is mobilizing federal resources: “We are deploying all resources to get her mother home safely.” He directed all federal law enforcement agencies to assist the family and local authorities immediately.
Savannah skipped Monday’s “Today” show and has been in the Tucson area with her siblings since the disappearance began, when Nancy was last seen Saturday night after being dropped off at her Catalina Foothills home and failed to appear at church Sunday morning.
The case remains an active criminal investigation with a “very concerning” scene at the home, including Nancy’s life-saving medication left behind. Police are reviewing security footage, Nancy’s cell phone, and urging residents with Ring cameras to check recordings from Saturday night.
Observers across the political spectrum have expressed concern over the abduction of a high-profile media figure’s mother, calling for swift federal involvement and full accountability to ensure her safe return amid rising worries about targeted crimes against families of public personalities.
The family’s plea underscores their desperation for Nancy’s safe return while cautiously navigating unverified ransom claims. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at (520) 351-4900.
