Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, is weighing a run to chair the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) for the 2028 election cycle, according to multiple Republican senators cited by Politico.
Moreno, who unseated three-term Democratic incumbent Sherrod Brown in 2024, has informed colleagues of his intention to pursue the position. The NRSC is responsible for recruiting candidates, raising funds, and coordinating campaign strategy to expand and defend the GOP’s Senate majority.
Sen. Jim Banks, R-Ind., described Moreno as a tireless campaigner and strong fundraiser, saying, “He’s a machine. He is always working. He’s an incredible fundraiser.”
Two Republican senators reportedly told Moreno he would likely secure the role if he formally sought it, though a member of Senate leadership recently floated Sen. Pete Ricketts, R-Neb., as another potential contender.
Moreno is viewed within the Senate GOP Conference as well-liked and closely aligned with the White House and President Donald Trump. During his 2024 Senate campaign, he built an extensive donor network and contributed significant funds to the NRSC, strengthening his standing among colleagues.
He has also taken on a visible role in Senate negotiations, particularly on healthcare policy.
The NRSC is currently chaired by Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., who has announced he will not seek re-election in 2028.
Republicans presently hold 53 Senate seats. In the 2026 cycle, the party is targeting pickup opportunities in Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota, and New Hampshire while defending seats in Texas, Iowa, North Carolina, Maine, Alaska, and Ohio. Looking ahead to 2028, potential battleground races are expected in Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
Moreno has not publicly launched a formal campaign for the NRSC chairmanship, but discussions about the role are already underway as the party maps out its long-term strategy.
