Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) told CNN he is considering a bid for the presidency in 2028. Kelly, a former astronaut, was reportedly on the shortlist for Vice President under Kamala Harris in 2024 but was passed over amid concerns over numerous controversies surrounding his career and public statements.
Kelly has consistently opposed the Trump administration on issues ranging from fiscal policy to national security, positioning himself as a vocal critic of former Republican leadership.
In addition to his political career, Kelly co-founded a company specializing in high-altitude surveillance balloons, reportedly receiving partial funding from a venture capitalist with close ties to the Chinese Communist Party. This connection has raised questions about his judgment and associations in sensitive defense-related industries.
Earlier this year, Kelly released a video urging military personnel to defy orders from President Trump, a move that sparked sharp criticism from veterans and military leaders.
Kelly is expected to be one of many Democrats considering a 2028 run, joining a potentially crowded field where his record and controversies are likely to face close scrutiny.
