Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) has announced that the SAVE America Act has reached 50 Senate sponsors, putting it within reach of a motion to proceed in the Senate. “We now have enough votes to pass a motion to proceed to the House-passed bill, even without any additional votes, with @VP breaking the tie,” Lee wrote on X.
Lee emphasized the use of the Talking Filibuster as a tool to ensure debate. “If Senators want to debate this, if they want to filibuster it, make them work for it,” he said in a video post, urging supporters to encourage participation in the process.
The House of Representatives previously passed the SAVE America Act 218-213, with only one Democrat, Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), voting in favor. The legislation updates the earlier Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which the Senate did not take up after its initial House approval last year.
Key provisions of the bill include requiring photo ID for federal elections, establishing a federal proof-of-citizenship requirement for voter registration, and mandating states maintain accurate voter rolls purged of ineligible individuals.
Former President Donald Trump praised the legislation on Truth Social, comparing the lack of voter ID to other political controversies and vowing federal enforcement. “We cannot let the Democrats get away with NO VOTER I.D. any longer … There will be Voter I.D. for the Midterm Elections, whether approved by Congress or not!” Trump wrote.
Supporters say the SAVE America Act is a critical step to protect election integrity and ensure that only eligible citizens participate in federal elections.
