Seven people are dead following a shooting inside a gated community in Sarasota, Florida, that authorities believe may be connected to a double homicide earlier the same day in Fort Lauderdale.
The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded at approximately 12:24 p.m. Tuesday to a 911 call reporting that an adult male had been shot in the front yard of a home on the 4800 block of Fallcrest Circle in the Amberlea subdivision. Neighbors were performing CPR when law enforcement arrived. The man was transported by Sarasota County Fire Department personnel and later pronounced dead.
Deputies entered the residence out of concern for the victim’s wife and discovered four additional deceased adults inside the home, two women and two men, including the suspected gunman. Authorities said the suspect died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
While processing the scene, Sarasota investigators were contacted by the Fort Lauderdale Police Department regarding a separate double homicide under investigation there. Law enforcement officials said the suspect’s vehicle had been captured on surveillance traveling north through Punta Gorda before the Sarasota killings. Video later showed the vehicle entering the Amberlea neighborhood at approximately 11:01 a.m., with the sound of gunfire recorded shortly afterward on a neighbor’s security camera.
According to investigators, the suspect had previously been in a romantic relationship with one of the Fort Lauderdale victims, who had connections to individuals at the Sarasota residence. Authorities believe the incidents are linked but said the motive remains under investigation.
Officials recovered a weapon at the Sarasota scene and reported no signs of forced entry. They described the situation as isolated and confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Names of the victims have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. Crime Scene, Forensics, and Criminal Investigation units remain involved as authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the shootings.
