A highly anticipated Finalissima match between Spain and Argentina has been canceled after plans to host the event in Qatar were abandoned due to the ongoing Middle East conflict and subsequent disputes over where the game should be relocated.
The Finalissima is a one-off match that pits the champions of Europe against the champions of South America, organized jointly by UEFA and CONMEBOL. Spain qualified for the match by winning UEFA Euro 2024, while Argentina secured its place after capturing the 2024 Copa América title.
UEFA confirmed Sunday that the match could no longer take place in Qatar as originally scheduled on March 27 due to what it described as the “political situation in the region.” Qatar has been among several Gulf states targeted by Iranian missile attacks amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.
After ruling out Qatar as the host site, UEFA said it attempted to arrange alternative venues but could not reach an agreement with the Argentine Football Association on a new plan.
According to UEFA, the governing body initially proposed holding the match at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium on the original March 27 date with an even split of supporters between the two countries. UEFA said Argentina rejected the proposal.
Officials then suggested a two-leg format, with one match played in Madrid on March 27 and a return match in Buenos Aires during a future international window before the next European Championship and Copa América tournaments in 2028. UEFA said the Argentine federation declined that proposal as well.
UEFA later asked Argentina to confirm whether it could still play the match on March 27 or March 30 if a neutral venue elsewhere in Europe could be secured. The organization said Argentina rejected those dates, proposed playing after the next World Cup instead, and later indicated it would only be available on March 31, a date UEFA said could not be accommodated.
“With strong determination to save the important fixture, and despite the understandable difficulties of relocating a match of such importance at extremely short notice, UEFA explored other feasible alternatives,” the European governing body said in a statement.
The Argentine Football Association offered a different version of events. In its own statement, the AFA said Argentina had insisted from the beginning that the match be played at a neutral venue and objected to staging the game in Madrid, arguing that playing in Spain would give the European champions a home-field advantage.
Argentine officials said they were presented with a proposal Saturday to host the match at a neutral venue in Italy on March 27 and accepted the location without objection, requesting only that the date be moved to March 31 because of the limited time available for preparations. The AFA said UEFA later responded that the date change was not possible.
The Finalissima was revived in recent years as part of a broader partnership between UEFA and CONMEBOL aimed at strengthening ties between European and South American football. The previous edition took place in 2022 at Wembley Stadium in London, where Argentina defeated Italy 3–0 to claim the title.
UEFA said it regretted that the 2026 edition could not be played and thanked organizers in Qatar, as well as Real Madrid and the Spanish Football Federation, for their efforts to try to host the match. The Argentine federation also expressed disappointment over the cancellation but maintained that it had remained willing to play the match at a neutral venue.
