Steak ‘n Shake has launched tater tots fried in 100% beef tallow, expanding its return to traditional cooking methods, and sparking a lively debate online.

The Indianapolis-based chain announced the move Monday on X, emphasizing that when tater tots were invented in the 1950s, they were originally cooked in beef tallow. “Steak ‘n Shake is bringing them to you in the 21st century as the only chain offering 100% Beef Tallow Tots,” the post read.

The announcement drew praise from fans excited to try the throwback tots, while others questioned the health benefits of using beef fat over vegetable oils. Some social media commenters recommended alternatives such as avocado or extra virgin olive oil, while others pointed out dietary restrictions, noting the product is not suitable for vegetarians, vegans, or those avoiding mammal products.

Nutrition experts cautioned that tater tots remain deep-fried foods regardless of frying medium. South Carolina dietitian Lauren Manaker said, “The high heat used in deep-frying can produce acrylamide, a chemical linked to potential health risks when consumed in large amounts, regardless of the type of oil or fat used.” She emphasized that tater tots should be enjoyed in moderation as an occasional indulgence.

California chef Andrew Gruel also weighed in, noting that tater tots must be properly prepared on-site to ensure they are fully seed oil–free.

Steak ‘n Shake has been on a mission to return to traditional methods, having switched its fries to beef tallow last year and announcing plans to remove all microwaves from kitchens by April 15. The company also recently introduced a bitcoin bonus for hourly employees and a $1,000 contribution to “Trump Accounts” to support employees’ children.

The new beef tallow tater tots highlight Steak ‘n Shake’s focus on retro cooking techniques, but they remain a polarizing topic among consumers debating health, taste, and dietary preferences.
