A 17-year-old robbery suspect was killed last week after police say he and three other teens opened fire on a man behind a Family Dollar store in Beaumont, Texas.

The shooting occurred near Avenue B and Harriot during what investigators described as a coordinated robbery attempt. Authorities said Jayson January, 17, Brenden Earnest, 17, and two additional juveniles confronted the victim and fired multiple shots at him.

Police said the victim was also armed and returned fire. January was struck during the exchange and later died in a grassy area near the store.

Earnest later turned himself in to the authorities and was charged with aggravated robbery. Jail records show he is being held at the Jefferson County Correctional Facility on a $1 million bond for that charge and a $10,000 bond for unlawfully carrying a weapon.

The two other suspects, ages 15 and 16, were initially sought by police but later surrendered. Authorities said warrants had been issued for their arrests on aggravated assault charges.

Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage and witness statements as the case is prepared for submission to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.
