Texas kept its March Madness run alive Saturday, defeating No. 3 seed Gonzaga 74-68 to advance to the Sweet 16 after entering the tournament through the First Four.
The 11th-seeded Longhorns secured their third win in five days in a tightly contested game that featured 10 lead changes and no double-digit advantage for either side. Texas pulled ahead late in the second half and held off a final push from Gonzaga to seal the upset.
Camden Heide delivered the decisive moment, hitting a clutch 3-pointer with 14 seconds remaining after being held scoreless for most of the game. The shot extended Texas’s lead and effectively ended Gonzaga’s comeback attempt.
Texas found success in the paint, scoring 46 points inside compared to Gonzaga’s 38, and capitalized on turnovers, holding an 11-2 edge in points off mistakes. Matas Vokietaitis and Jordan Pope each led the Longhorns with 17 points, while Gonzaga’s Graham Ike finished with a game-high 25 points.
The win marks the first time since 2021 that a First Four team has reached the Sweet 16. Texas now advances to face the winner of Purdue and Miami in the next round.
The Longhorns entered the tournament on a losing streak but have surged at the right time, emerging as one of the standout stories of this year’s bracket.
