Klamath Falls police arrested three individuals in connection with the brutal killing of a homeless man found in a vacant home in Oregon.
Officers discovered 35-year-old Kolton Esparza on Feb. 26 during a welfare check. He was naked, tied with a rope, and had signs of severe beating and torture. Esparza was transported to a hospital, where he died the following day from his injuries, with the medical examiner citing “severe head trauma” as the cause of death.
Authorities charged 49-year-old Jamie S. Harrington, her brother, 34-year-old Reggie L. Townsend Jr., and 39-year-old Wesley J. Powless after investigating the attack. Prosecutors say Harrington drove Esparza to the Eulalona Trailhead, where Townsend and Powless allegedly beat him, chased him to a vacant home, and continued the assault using a brick or rock and kicking him. Powless and Townsend reportedly cleaned the scene and removed evidence in a garbage bag.
Investigators obtained a confession letter from Townsend to his girlfriend stating, “I beat Kolton with a rock and stomped him out with my shoes.” Townsend had been released only three months prior after serving a manslaughter sentence.
Harrington was charged with first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, tampering with evidence, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Powless and Townsend face charges of second-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, and tampering with evidence. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.
