The Trump administration on Monday unveiled a sweeping package of sanctions and enforcement measures against Iran, branding the effort an "economic D-Day" aimed at isolating the regime from global finance.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the initiative, officially called Operation Economic Outcast, during a press conference. The measures expand secondary sanctions risks across five key sectors that Iran uses to generate revenue and evade restrictions: digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping. Officials described the campaign as a "zero-leakage approach" to block every source of funding for the Islamic Republic and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned nearly 60 entities, individuals, and vessels involved in oil smuggling, cyber operations, missile procurement, and related activities. The targets span multiple countries, including China, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, and others facilitating Iran's shadow fleet and financial networks.
Bessent stated that the United States has mapped Iran's sanctions-evasion networks and will enforce strict timelines for foreign governments and institutions to end business ties with Tehran. Countries and entities that fail to comply face removal from the U.S. dollar system and additional penalties. He emphasized that the actions build on prior military efforts that have already weakened Iran's capabilities.
The announcement comes as the conflict with Iran approaches its six-month mark. President Trump has highlighted the economic pressure as a decisive tool to force the regime to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end its support for terrorism. In a Truth Social post, Trump stated that Iran is "COMPLETELY COLLAPSING!!!"
Iranian officials dismissed the new measures as familiar tactics they have endured for decades. The administration's approach prioritizes maximum economic isolation while coordinating with allies and issuing clear warnings to third-party enablers.
Bessent noted that the campaign represents the single greatest financial offensive against an adversary, to leave Tehran standing alone economically. The measures include both immediate designations and broader authorities to pursue violators rapidly.
