President Donald Trump has called for an investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar, citing reports that estimate her net worth at approximately $30 million during her time in Congress.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump questioned how Omar accumulated such wealth while serving in office and urged federal authorities to begin an investigation, arguing that her finances warrant closer scrutiny.
Trump suggested that Omar’s reported wealth cannot be explained by her congressional salary or publicly known income sources. He said elected officials should be held to the highest standards of transparency and accountability, particularly when significant increases in personal wealth occur while holding public office.
The president also criticized Omar’s past political positions and rhetoric, accusing her of repeatedly attacking American institutions while benefiting from the authority and privileges of elected office. He said the issue extends beyond partisan politics and centers on whether public officials are using their positions for personal financial gain.
Trump’s comments come amid broader debates over congressional ethics, including stock trading and financial disclosure requirements for members of Congress. Omar has not publicly responded to Trump’s remarks.
The call for an investigation coincides with ongoing scrutiny involving the House Oversight Committee, which has examined Omar’s financial disclosures and the consulting firm E Street Group, owned by her husband, Tim Mynett. The firm has received more than $3 million from Omar’s campaign since 2018, prompting allegations from critics of potential conflicts of interest or improper use of campaign funds. No wrongdoing has been formally established.
Trump described Omar as “crooked” and tied her case to broader claims of Democratic corruption, urging Republicans in Congress to prioritize further investigation.
