President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that he is “hearing” Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl is considering a run for lieutenant governor and would have his “complete and total endorsement” if he decides to enter the race.
“John has been with us from the very beginning,” Trump wrote, highlighting Wahl’s role in Republican victories in Alabama, including Trump’s historic wins in 2016, 2020, and 2024. He added that as lieutenant governor, Wahl would fight to grow the economy, cut taxes, promote Made in the USA, support farmers and fishermen, secure the border, strengthen the military, protect elections, and defend the Second Amendment.
Wahl, a butterfly farmer from north Alabama and state GOP chairman since 2021, told the State Republican Executive Committee in June that he is “seriously considering a run” for lieutenant governor. He also serves as chairman of the Alabama Public Library Service Board, where he has been involved in disputes over library materials.
As of Thursday, Wahl has not qualified for the race, which has a Friday deadline. Other Republicans already in the primary include Secretary of State Wes Allen, Agriculture Commissioner Rick Pate, pastor Dean Odle, deputy Patrick Bishop, and commercial real estate developer Nicole Wadsworth. The Republican primary is scheduled for May 19, 2026.
