President Donald Trump announced Saturday that he is withdrawing his endorsement of Rep. Jeff Hurd (R-Colo.) over what he described as Hurd’s failure to support the administration’s “unbelievably successful” tariffs, and he is instead endorsing Hope Scheppelman in the upcoming GOP primary.
“Based on a lack of support, in particular for the unbelievably successful TARIFFS imposed on Foreign Countries and Companies which has made America Richer, Stronger, Bigger, and Better than ever before, I am hereby WITHDRAWING my Endorsement of RINO Congressman Jeff Hurd… and fully Endorsing Highly Respected Patriot, Hope Scheppelman, to take his place in Congress,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Hurd, who represents Colorado’s 3rd District, was among six House Republicans who joined Democrats in voting to repeal Trump-era tariffs on Canada by terminating the national emergency the president had invoked to impose the measures. Hurd defended his vote, citing Congressional authority over trade and expressing concerns about broad emergency powers.
Trump criticized Hurd’s stance, writing that the congressman “let me and our Country down” and accused him of prioritizing foreign interests over American prosperity. The president noted that this is only the second time he has withdrawn an endorsement, citing his 2022 decision to pull support from Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.), who later lost his primary.
Trump emphasized that defending the tariffs is part of his ongoing effort to “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” and pointed to his new proposal for a 15 percent universal tariff on imports as a continuation of his trade policies.
Scheppelman, a former Colorado GOP vice chair, will face Hurd in the June 30 Republican primary for the 3rd Congressional District. Trump’s endorsement positions her as the candidate aligned with his pro-America trade agenda and commitment to protecting domestic industry.
