A shooting at a high school hockey game in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, left two dead and three others in critical condition on Monday afternoon. Police identified the suspect as Robert Dorgan, also known as Roberta Esposito, who died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot.
Officers arrived at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena within approximately 90 seconds of receiving calls reporting an active shooter at around 2:30 p.m. The incident occurred during a senior night game for the Blackstone Valley Schools cooperative hockey team.
Authorities described the shooting as targeted, stemming from a family dispute. A bystander attempted to confront the shooter before he took his own life, according to Police Chief Tina Goncalves. Officials have not released the names of the victims while families are being notified.
Witnesses reported hearing 15 to 20 gunshots and described frantic scenes as players and spectators sought cover. Some victims were family members of the suspect, and three injured victims were hospitalized in critical condition.
Federal authorities, including the FBI and ATF, assisted local law enforcement at the arena. Mayor Don Grebien called the shooting “a terrible tragedy” and said the city is mourning, noting that what should have been a celebratory event turned violent.
