At the University of California, Berkeley, an Ethnic Studies professor eliminated traditional final exams, assigning students to edit and create Wikipedia articles focused on LGBTQ+ subjects, particularly queer and transgender people of color.
According to Campus Reform, the assignment was conducted through Wiki Education, an organization that partners with faculty to incorporate Wikipedia editing into coursework. Students were tasked with pages including “Queer Vampires” and “LGBTQ themes in horror fiction,” among others.
The professor framed the assignment as a response to the Trump administration, claiming it was urgent to document the histories and challenges of queer and transgender communities. Her listed areas of expertise include transgender studies, queer activism in the Americas, and sex work.
Wiki Education reports that classes using its platform have collectively made over 300,000 edits and added 3,000 citations to Wikipedia articles, with nearly 100 million views.
Critics argue that assignments like this replace meaningful education with ideological instruction, doing little to prepare students for real-world careers or challenges after graduation.
The course, titled “Queer of Color,” is being cited as an example of what some view as leftist indoctrination infiltrating higher education, with activist priorities taking the place of traditional academic standards.
