The White House on Friday rejected reports that President Donald Trump is considering removing Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, calling the claims “fake news.”
White House Communications Director Steven Cheung said Trump “has total confidence” in Gabbard, dismissing suggestions of internal discussions about her potential dismissal. “The President has assembled the most talented and impactful Cabinet ever, and they have collectively delivered historic victories on behalf of the American people,” Cheung said in a post on X.
The response followed a report published Thursday alleging that Trump had privately asked Cabinet members whether Gabbard should be replaced after her recent congressional testimony. During that appearance, Gabbard declined to condemn Joe Kent, who later resigned after arguing that Iran did not pose an imminent threat to the United States.
Trump previously criticized Kent’s position, stating his departure was “a good thing” and emphasizing that U.S. officials and allies view Iran as a clear threat. When asked earlier whether he maintained confidence in Gabbard, Trump responded that while she may differ in her approach, it does not disqualify her from serving.
The speculation comes amid recent personnel changes within the administration. Trump confirmed Thursday that Attorney General Pam Bondi is leaving her role and will transition to a position in the private sector. He also reassigned Kristi Noem last month from Secretary of Homeland Security to a State Department envoy role.
Bondi’s departure followed scrutiny over the Justice Department’s handling of high-profile matters, including issues related to the Jeffrey Epstein case and internal disagreements over prosecutorial priorities. Trump praised Bondi’s service, calling her a “great American patriot” and a “loyal friend.”
Despite the reported internal discussions, the White House maintained that there are no plans to remove Gabbard, emphasizing continued confidence in her leadership as Director of National Intelligence.
