The New York Yankees launched the 2026 MLB season with a dominant 7-0 shutout victory over the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday night at Oracle Park.
Max Fried delivered 6 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and setting the tone for New York's fifth straight season-opening win. The left-hander escaped a first-inning jam and benefited from an early offensive explosion, marking the Yankees' first Opening Day road shutout since 1967.
New York's offense erupted for five runs in the second inning against Giants starter Logan Webb. José Caballero plated the first run with an RBI single, followed by Ryan McMahon's two-run single, Austin Wells' RBI single, and Trent Grisham's two-run triple. Additional runs came via RBIs from Giancarlo Stanton and Jazz Chisholm Jr., as the Yankees tallied nine hits without a home run. Yankees manager Aaron Boone praised the "pressurized at-bats," noting, "On a night when we didn’t hit the ball out of the ballpark, we had a lot of good pressurized at-bats."
Aaron Judge, facing a homecoming crowd in his native California, went hitless in five at-bats with four strikeouts, the first reigning MVP to fan four times in a season opener. Fried highlighted the lineup's depth: "This team led the Majors in runs scored last year, and we have a lot of the same guys back."
The game introduced MLB's Automated Ball-Strike System at Oracle Park, with Caballero's unsuccessful challenge on a called strike marking the first use. A sellout crowd of 40,856 watched the 2:27 contest, streamed exclusively on Netflix.
Thursday's full Opening Day slate featured high-scoring affairs. The New York Mets topped the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-7 after Paul Skenes lasted just two-thirds of an inning. Milwaukee Brewers crushed the Chicago White Sox 14-2, with Jacob Misiorowski fanning 11 in five innings. Washington Nationals beat the Chicago Cubs 10-4, while Baltimore Orioles edged Minnesota Twins 2-1.
Several games remained in progress late Thursday afternoon, including the Boston Red Sox leading Cincinnati Reds 1-0 in the seventh, Philadelphia Phillies up 5-0 on Texas Rangers, and others featuring the Dodgers, Mariners, and more. The 2026 season promises contention across divisions, with the Yankees setting a strong tone out of the gate under continued expectations in the AL East.
