Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Monday that 11 countries, along with the United States and several European partners, have asked Ukraine for help defending against drones launched by Iran following a week of conflict in the Middle East.
Zelenskyy said the requests came from nations near Iran seeking assistance in countering drone attacks similar to those Ukraine has faced from Russian forces during the war. Kyiv has developed extensive experience defending against drones modeled after Iranian designs used by Russia.
“There is clear interest in Ukraine's experience in protecting lives, relevant interceptors, electronic warfare systems, and training,” Zelenskyy wrote on social media following a national security meeting.
Ukraine has increasingly focused on interceptor drones and electronic warfare systems as cost-effective ways to defeat incoming aerial threats. Interceptor drones, which can cost only a few thousand dollars each, are designed to destroy incoming drones before they reach their targets.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine is prepared to assist partners that have supported Kyiv during Russia’s invasion.
“Ukraine is ready to respond positively to requests from those who help us protect the lives of Ukrainians and the independence of Ukraine,” he said.
He added that some of the requests have already resulted in “concrete decisions and specific support,” though he did not provide additional details.
Ukraine’s defense industry has been expanding production of interceptor drones as the war with Russia continues. Ukrainian companies are reportedly ramping up manufacturing with the possibility of exporting the systems to international partners.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine will evaluate each request carefully to ensure any assistance provided does not weaken the country’s own defenses as it continues to face regular Russian missile and drone attacks.
