Ten people were killed when multiple gunmen stormed an entertainment venue selling grilled meat in the Lwandle township near Cape Town early Sunday morning.

The attack occurred around 1:46 a.m. local time, according to Western Cape police. Five victims died at the scene, and five others succumbed to their injuries after being transported to medical facilities. Eleven additional people were wounded in the shooting.

Police said the gunmen entered the venue and opened fire on patrons. No arrests have been made, and authorities are searching for multiple suspects. Detectives from the serious violent crime unit are leading the investigation.

The incident came hours after a separate mass shooting near Johannesburg that left 17 people dead. In that attack, eight gunmen armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols stormed a tavern in the Wedela township around 9:30 p.m. Saturday, killing 13 men and four women while wounding 15 others. Suspects reportedly torched vehicles before fleeing.

South Africa continues to grapple with one of the world's highest murder rates, with frequent deadly attacks at bars, taverns, and informal venues often linked to organized crime, gang rivalries, or illegal mining disputes. The latest shootings follow a mass killing at a house party near Durban just days earlier that claimed 11 lives.

Police have not confirmed a motive for the Cape Town attack but are pursuing leads. The country has faced ongoing criticism over police capacity and corruption issues amid persistent violent crime in township communities.
