Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez transferred $1 million from her campaign account to a joint fundraising committee backing Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan on Friday.
The funds went to the Abdul for Michigan Victory Fund, which involves El-Sayed’s campaign, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and the Michigan Democratic State Central Committee. The move marks one of the larger contributions from a House member to an out-of-state Senate contest.
Ocasio-Cortez made the announcement while campaigning in Michigan. She joined El-Sayed on a bus tour through the Upper Peninsula on Thursday and held events in the Detroit area on Friday. In a statement, she said she did not want to regret insufficient efforts against criticism of El-Sayed. She described the transfer as coming from her campaign’s donor base rather than personal funds.
El-Sayed, a physician and former Detroit health official, defeated Rep. Haley Stevens in the Democratic primary. He faces former Rep. Mike Rogers, the Republican nominee, in a race viewed as competitive for control of the Senate. The contest has drawn significant spending, with advertising totals exceeding $180 million.
Ocasio-Cortez entered October with nearly $17.4 million in cash on hand after raising $4.7 million in the third quarter. She has positioned herself as a major progressive fundraiser and endorsed El-Sayed earlier this year. Reports indicate she is weighing options including a potential 2028 presidential bid or other moves.
The donation underscores efforts by progressive figures to influence key battlegrounds ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.
