Apple Chairman Tim Cook announced Thursday that the company’s Apple Intelligence service has received approval for use in China, with a test version expected later in October as the company expands its presence in one of its most important markets.
The test version will include live translation, writing tools and image-cleanup features, but will not include Siri’s AI capabilities, according to Chinese state-backed media outlet The Paper, which reported details from an exclusive interview with Cook in Shanghai.
Apple has developed a large language model specifically for the Chinese market, marking a departure from its strategy of relying on third-party models to power its features in the country. The model was developed in partnership with Alibaba Group, which supported its training.
China’s cyberspace regulator said in July that Apple Intelligence, the company’s on-device generative AI service, had been registered for use on iPhones in China. The approval clears a regulatory hurdle for Apple as it works to bring its latest software features to Chinese consumers.
Cook also met with Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao on Thursday, according to China’s Ministry of Commerce. The two discussed the development of AI and Apple’s business operations in China, highlighting the company’s continued engagement with Chinese officials as it seeks to expand its services in the country.
