Independent Australian MP Helen Haines remains in critical condition in a Melbourne hospital after she was deliberately struck by a car outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria, on Monday afternoon.
The 65-year-old member for Indi was hit by a white Toyota Landcruiser around 3:35 p.m. local time as she stood near her office on Murphy Street. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as a deliberate act rather than an accident, noting that the vehicle made a U-turn before striking her. Witnesses reported that the driver reversed and hit her a second time.
A 43-year-old man from the nearby town of Tarrawingee was arrested at the scene after a passerby detained him. Victoria Police seized a knife from the vehicle. The suspect remains in custody as counter-terrorism police join the investigation into the attack. Authorities have stated there is no ongoing threat to the community.
Haines was airlifted to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, where she underwent surgery overnight. She remains in critical but stable condition. Her family thanked bystanders for their swift assistance and confirmed she is receiving medical care.
Albanese condemned the violence and highlighted a rise in reports of threatening or harassing behavior toward politicians, which increased from 951 to 1,067 in the past year. He urged Australians to lower the temperature of political discourse amid growing division.
Haines, first elected in 2019 and re-elected in 2022 and 2025, is known as an anti-corruption advocate and former nurse and midwife. The attack marks a rare instance of political violence in Australia, prompting widespread condemnation across party lines.
