Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent declined to directly answer multiple questions about whether the United States considers Ukraine an ally during an appearance on NBC's Meet the Press on Sunday.

Bessent was asked three times if Ukraine qualifies as a U.S. ally. He first highlighted American support through intelligence sharing, Starlink access, and permission for NATO members to purchase and resell U.S. weapons to Ukraine. On the second query, he stated that such provisions constitute actions taken for an ally and noted that similar support is not extended to Russia. When pressed a third time, Bessent responded that he is neither the secretary of state nor the president.

The exchange occurred against a backdrop of friction between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Zelenskyy had accused the U.S. government of restricting Starlink speeds used by Ukrainian forces. Bessent denied any U.S. involvement and described Zelenskyy's claim as reckless.

Bessent also pointed to shortfalls in European support for Ukraine. He questioned why European NATO members have not supplied Patriot missile systems when Zelenskyy requested them, noting that those nations possess ample stocks.

The Trump administration has prioritized ending the conflict in Ukraine through negotiated settlement rather than prolonged military engagement. Bessent reiterated that President Trump has worked toward this goal since taking office and rejected characterizations framing U.S. policy as siding with Russia.

This approach reflects a focus on pragmatic diplomacy and avoiding escalation, consistent with longstanding conservative critiques of open-ended foreign aid commitments. European partners have faced similar scrutiny for insufficient contributions relative to their capabilities.
