The Milwaukee Brewers rallied from a four-run deficit to defeat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4 on Saturday, October 24, taking a 2-0 lead in the World Series at American Family Field in Milwaukee.
The victory marked Milwaukee’s seventh comeback win of the postseason and continued a remarkable run for a team seeking its first World Series title. The Brewers have now overcome a four-run deficit twice during this postseason, demonstrating their ability to recover from difficult starts.
Tampa Bay struck first, jumping ahead 4-0 in the opening inning against Brewers rookie pitcher Logan Henderson. Chandler Simpson and Junior Caminero delivered RBI singles before Liam Hicks crushed a two-run home run to give the Rays an early advantage.
Henderson struggled to contain Tampa Bay’s offense, allowing four runs, three earned, over three innings. However, Milwaukee quickly began chipping away at the deficit.
Jackson Chourio and Jake Bauers opened the bottom of the first with singles, and William Contreras drove in a run with a single after a defensive misplay. Garrett Mitchell added another RBI single, cutting Tampa Bay’s lead to 4-2.
The Brewers moved within one run in the fourth inning when David Hamilton grounded into a play that resulted in an error by Rays first baseman Jonathan Aranda, allowing Cooper Pratt to score.
Milwaukee continued applying pressure, and Sal Frelick delivered the biggest swing of the game in the sixth inning. After working through a nine-pitch at-bat against Tampa Bay reliever Ian Seymour, Frelick launched a solo home run over the center-field fence to tie the score at 4-4.
The homer was particularly significant for Frelick, who had gone 103 plate appearances without a home run. His blast also marked his first home run against a left-handed pitcher since Opening Day.
The Brewers completed the comeback in the seventh inning. Brice Turang doubled and advanced on Garrett Mitchell’s flyout before Pratt delivered a go-ahead single into shallow right field, bringing Turang home for a 5-4 Milwaukee lead.
The 22-year-old Pratt, who made his major league debut in June, provided the decisive hit in a game that had swung heavily in Tampa Bay’s favor during the opening inning.
Milwaukee’s bullpen then shut down the Rays over the final six innings. Abner Uribe earned the victory after pitching 1 1/3 hitless innings, while Aaron Ashby secured the save by recording the final outs. Ashby struck out Yandy Díaz to end the game, preserving the one-run lead.
Tampa Bay threatened in the ninth inning when Jonny DeLuca doubled against Ashby, putting the potential tying run in scoring position. However, the Brewers closer worked through the pressure to finish the victory.
The Rays also struggled defensively, committing one official error and making two additional misplays that could have been scored as errors. Tampa Bay had another scoring opportunity cut short in the sixth inning when Chourio threw out Hicks at home plate.
With the win, Milwaukee extended its winning streak to seven games and took a commanding 2-0 advantage in the best-of-seven World Series. Historically, 46 of the previous 57 teams to win the first two games of a World Series went on to capture the championship.
The series now shifts to St. Petersburg, Florida, for Game 3 on Monday night. Tampa Bay will attempt to get back into the series on its home field, while Milwaukee will look to move one step closer to its first championship.
