The BYU Cougars defeated the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 28-24 on Saturday night at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah, handing the No. 2-ranked Irish their first loss of the season and giving No. 8 BYU one of the biggest victories in program history. The Cougars improved to 6-0, while Notre Dame fell to 6-1.
BYU took control in the second quarter after Notre Dame opened the scoring with a 46-yard field goal by Spencer Porath. Running back Nolan James Jr. later scored on an eight-yard touchdown run to give the Irish a 10-7 advantage.
The Cougars responded with a touchdown pass from quarterback Bear Bachmeier to wide receiver Kyler Kasper, followed by a one-yard touchdown run from Bachmeier. Those scores helped BYU establish a 21-10 halftime lead.
Notre Dame fought back after halftime, cutting into the deficit and keeping the game within reach. The Irish added points in the third quarter before scoring again in the fourth, but BYU answered with a touchdown of its own to preserve the lead.
Bachmeier played a key role in the Cougars' offensive performance, completing 13 of 18 passes for 129 yards while also rushing for two touchdowns. Notre Dame running back Nolan James Jr. contributed a touchdown on the ground as the Fighting Irish attempted to rally.
The victory marked a major milestone for BYU, which entered the contest unbeaten and faced its toughest test of the season against a Notre Dame team that had won its first six games. The matchup also marked the first time BYU hosted a game between two teams ranked in the top 10 nationally.
With the win, BYU strengthened its standing in the Big 12 and added a signature victory to its national championship résumé. Notre Dame, meanwhile, will have to regroup after seeing its undefeated start come to an end in a tightly contested road game.
