The Cleveland Browns have named former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken as their next head coach, the team announced Wednesday. Monken, 60, replaces Kevin Stefanski, who was fired Jan. 5 after six seasons. Cleveland finished 5-12 in 2025 and has an 8-26 record since last reaching the playoffs in 2023.
Monken spent the past three seasons with the Ravens, helping quarterback Lamar Jackson win his second MVP in 2023 and guiding Baltimore to its first No. 1 ranked offense in franchise history in 2024. Despite success, Jackson and Monken reportedly had chemistry issues in 2025, contributing to inconsistent offensive performance, particularly in the red zone. Monken also served as the Browns’ offensive coordinator in 2019 under Freddie Kitchens and spent time as wide receivers coach for the Jaguars from 2007 to 2010.
Cleveland owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam praised Monken’s leadership and player development skills, noting his “clear vision,” accountability, and strong communication. Browns GM Andrew Berry emphasized Monken’s diverse experience and flexible offensive approach, which will allow the team to rebuild a unit that ranked last in scoring over the previous two seasons. Monken will also have input on the quarterback position, with Deshaun Watson expected to return from a torn Achilles alongside rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders.
Monken inherits a top-tier defense led by coordinator Jim Schwartz, which has allowed the fewest yards per game and posted the league’s best third-down conversion rate since 2023. Defensive end Myles Garrett is the favorite to win his second Defensive Player of the Year award. While Schwartz’s future remains uncertain, Jimmy Haslam has expressed a desire to retain him, with final staff decisions left to Monken.
The Browns hold the sixth and 24th picks in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, part of a total of 10 selections, giving Monken the opportunity to shape both offense and defense as he begins his first NFL head coaching role.
