Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said he would ensure Tesla's flying Roadster prototype becomes street legal in the state. The comment came Friday after the governor reacted to a dramatic unveiling demonstration of the vehicle.

DeSantis posted on X after viewing footage of the Tesla Roadster prototype performing aerial maneuvers. The vehicle used high-powered fans and SpaceX-derived cold-gas thrusters to launch over other Tesla cars, execute turns in the air, and land safely. It also demonstrated acceleration from zero to 60 mph in under one second during the event in McGregor, Texas.

When a user asked if the Roadster would be street legal in Florida, DeSantis replied: "We will make sure that it’s legal". Elon Musk responded to the post with a fire emoji.

The Roadster demonstration highlighted advanced capabilities inspired by Tesla and SpaceX technology. Tesla has indicated the flying "Rocket" configuration is invite-only and noted that production of the revamped Roadster is slated for 2028. The company has not finalized pricing or confirmed all performance specs for public sale.

DeSantis's response aligns with Florida's ongoing efforts to position itself as a hub for emerging transportation technologies. Earlier this year, the governor signed legislation to support vertiport development and testing of electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft at facilities like SunTrax in Polk County.

The flying features of the Roadster raise questions about federal aviation regulations and state vehicle codes, as noted in coverage of the event. Tesla has stated that certain advanced modes are not approved for public road use. DeSantis's pledge reflects the state's business-friendly approach to innovation from companies like Tesla.
