A shooting at an apartment building in downtown Minneapolis on Wednesday afternoon left two civilians dead and multiple others injured, including three Minneapolis police officers.

Minneapolis police responded to reports of gunfire at the Shoreline Plaza Apartments near 15 East Grant Street at 4:36 p.m. Officers arrived to find multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds and the shooter on the second floor of the building. A significant law enforcement presence followed, including SWAT teams and officers from multiple agencies.

Two people have been pronounced dead as of Wednesday night, one at the scene and one after transport to a hospital, with three more victims taken to Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment. Three Minneapolis police officers were also injured at the scene, two of which from gunshot wounds. All three officers are currently expected to survive and make a full recovery, according to city officials.

The suspected shooter has been identified as 35-year-old Carlton Johnson II (pictured). He was declared deceased at the scene, according to law enforcement. Johnson has previously had encounters with law enforcement, including making threats to security and illegally flashing a firearm, as well as a history of drug abuse and domestic arrests. Eviction papers were filed against Johnson in late June, according to filings.

Sources indicated that officers had responded to the same apartment earlier in the day for a domestic disturbance involving Johnson and another apartment resident.

The incident marks another instance of violence in Minneapolis, where police have faced repeated challenges responding to calls in high-crime areas. Officials continue to gather details as the investigation continues.
