The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles disclosed that a cybercriminal accessed department records on September 4, potentially exposing driver license information, motor vehicle records, document images, and other personal data belonging to Floridians.
According to the department’s breach notice, the unauthorized access involved compromised credentials and was attributed to an international cybercriminal organization. The agency said it moved quickly to contain the incident by blocking unauthorized access, resetting affected credentials, and implementing additional security measures.
The investigation is being conducted in coordination with the Florida Digital Service and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
“At this time, FLHSMV has no evidence indicating that information has been misused,” the department said.
The agency plans to notify current driver license and identification card holders whose information may have been affected. It has also partnered with Sontiq Inc., a TransUnion company, to provide eligible individuals with one year of complimentary identity and credit monitoring, as well as $1 million in identity theft insurance.
Some people may not receive a notification letter, including former Florida license or identification card holders who no longer have a valid card or a current mailing address on file. Those individuals can contact the department for additional information.
FLHSMV is urging potentially affected residents to take precautions while the investigation continues. Recommendations include reviewing financial statements and credit reports, watching online accounts for suspicious activity, and considering a fraud alert or security freeze with the major credit bureaus.
The department also directed residents to the Federal Trade Commission’s IdentityTheft.gov data breach resource for guidance on protecting personal information.
Although the agency has not identified evidence of misuse, the incident highlights the risks associated with unauthorized access to government databases containing sensitive information on drivers, vehicles, and identity documents.
