Former NFL defensive end Allen Bailey died Tuesday at the age of 37. His wife found him at their Florida home, and his brother Alford Bailey Jr. confirmed the news to several outlets. The family believes the cause was natural.
Bailey spent eight seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs after they selected him in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft out of the University of Miami. He played in 102 games for the team, started 61, and recorded 19.5 sacks. He finished his career with the Atlanta Falcons in 2019 and 2020, appearing in 31 games. Across 133 regular-season games and 70 starts, Bailey finished with 22 sacks and 248 tackles.
A native of Sapelo Island, Georgia, Bailey attended McIntosh County Academy and earned first-team All-ACC honors in 2009 and second-team recognition in 2010 while at Miami. Teammates and the Chiefs organization shared their sorrow on Wednesday. Former Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe posted on Instagram that Bailey ranked among the best teammates he ever had. Former Miami teammate Colin McCarthy wrote on social media that he had lost a brother. Former Chiefs offensive lineman Jeff Allen described Bailey as a teammate, friend, and brother.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid called the loss way too young during a Wednesday news conference. The team released a statement remembering Bailey as an excellent teammate, a generous man, and a kind soul. During his playing days, he earned the nickname "The Hulk" for his powerful build and presence on the defensive line.
