The Cleveland Guardians defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series on Thursday, October 15, as rookie outfielder Petey Halpin delivered the decisive home run and the pitching staff shut down Tampa Bay over the final five innings.
The Rays took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning when Chandler Simpson tripled with two outs, driving in two runs. Cleveland starter Gavin Williams limited the damage and kept the Guardians within striking distance before the offense responded in the fifth.
Halpin then delivered the game's biggest hit, launching a two-run home run to put Cleveland ahead 3-2. The 385-foot blast was the first postseason home run of his career and proved to be the difference in a tightly contested game.
Williams struck out nine batters over five innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs. Cleveland's bullpen took over from there, with Daniel Espino, Erik Sabrowski, Hunter Gaddis and Cade Smith helping preserve the narrow lead. Smith recorded his second save of the series.
The Guardians finished with six hits and struck out eight times, while Tampa Bay managed only three hits. Cleveland's pitching staff recorded 13 strikeouts overall, continuing a dominant postseason run.
The victory put the Guardians ahead two games to one in the best-of-seven series, giving them an opportunity to build an even larger advantage in Game 4 at Progressive Field.
