Almost every House Democrat voted Tuesday against a nonbinding resolution that condemns socialism in all its forms and calls for enactment of the SAVE America Act.

The resolution, introduced by Rep. Jeff Crank, R-Colo., denounces socialism, including the Democratic Socialists of America, and opposes the implementation of socialist policies in the United States. It passed 220-192, with eight Democrats joining Republicans and two Democrats voting present.

The Democrats who crossed the aisle were Reps. Kathy Castor and Darren Soto of Florida, Vicente Gonzalez and Henry Cuellar of Texas, Jared Golden of Maine, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington, Don Davis of North Carolina, and Gabe Vasquez of New Mexico.

Several Democrats objected specifically to language urging passage of the SAVE America Act. That legislation would require documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote, mandate photo identification for federal ballots, direct states to identify and remove noncitizens from voter rolls, and limit mail-in voting primarily to those unable to vote in person.

Rep. Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J., who has publicly opposed the Democratic Socialists of America, said he would have supported a resolution limited solely to denouncing socialism. “This isn’t a serious bill,” he told Axios.

The vote marked a shift from November, when 86 Democrats backed a similar anti-socialism resolution. That earlier vote occurred before several democratic socialist and allied candidates defeated party-backed incumbents in 2026 House primaries.

On the House floor, Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Wis., called the measure “stupid” and argued it ignored rising living costs while failing to address communism or recent federal equity stakes in private companies. Rep. Valerie Foushee, D-N.C., posted that the House should instead condemn “the 34-count felon in the White House.”

Crank responded on X that the “vast majority of Democrats just voted AGAINST my resolution to condemn socialism in all its forms” and that Democratic leaders refuse to denounce the Democratic Socialists of America “for fear of political retribution among their ranks.”
