Israeli security forces launched extensive raids across the occupied West Bank on Saturday, detaining dozens of Palestinians and conducting searches in at least 15 towns, following the deaths of two Israeli soldiers in a shooting attack near Hebron the day before.

The operations targeted areas including Nablus, Jenin, and Hebron, with reports of home raids, arrests, and the demolition of a three-story building in Hebron. Families in the targeted structure received only minutes to gather belongings before bulldozers moved in. The Israeli military described the actions as part of efforts to locate and dismantle terrorist infrastructure linked to the Friday attack.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a full lockdown of the West Bank and a cordon around Hebron after the incident. He pledged house-to-house sweeps to remove weapons and destroy terror networks, stating the response would include unprecedented measures in the territory.

The attack occurred Friday morning near the Yehuda Junction outside Hebron. Two Palestinian gunmen from Hebron opened fire on an Israeli military position, killing Staff Sgt. Ron Yonatan Roytman, 23, from Ashkelon, and Sgt. Yuval Shai Svilem, 20, from Hod Hasharon. Three other soldiers were lightly wounded. Israeli forces killed both attackers after a gunfight lasting about 20 minutes. The military said the incident prevented a larger terror attack against civilians.

The violence comes days before Israel's parliamentary elections on Tuesday, with security issues already prominent. Netanyahu described the planned operations as broader than any since the 1967 Six-Day War.

Hamas praised the attack without claiming responsibility and called for further actions. The raids have imposed significant restrictions on Palestinian movement, closing numerous checkpoints and affecting daily life across the territory.

Longstanding tensions in the West Bank, where Israeli forces routinely conduct operations to counter threats from militant groups, has resulted in repeated attacks on Israeli soldiers and civilians, prompting successive governments to maintain a strong security presence. The latest response underscores Israel's commitment to protecting its citizens amid ongoing regional instability and threats from Iran-backed organizations operating in Palestinian territories.
