House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., warned Republican donors that Democrats would use congressional control to launch investigations into President Donald Trump’s family, Cabinet members, donors and political allies if they retake Congress, according to remarks quoted by Rolling Stone.
“They will turn every committee of Congress into an investigative body, and they’ll go after the president’s family, the Cabinet, his donors and friends,” Johnson said. “Half of you in this room will be targeted. I run the protection program. I’ll take care of you.”
Johnson’s remarks frame the stakes of the midterm elections as Republicans attempt to preserve their congressional majorities. Control of the House would determine which party chairs committees, sets investigative priorities and exercises congressional oversight of the Trump administration.
A Democratic majority could use that authority to investigate administration policies and actions, while Republican leaders could face renewed scrutiny over the president and his allies. Johnson’s comments also underscored his effort to reassure donors that he would work to shield Republicans from what he portrayed as politically motivated investigations.
The warning comes as both parties prepare for a consequential midterm contest, with control of Congress shaping the direction of the Trump administration’s remaining legislative agenda and the scope of congressional investigations.
