Microsoft is offering voluntary buyouts to approximately 60,000 employees across four countries as the technology giant continues investing heavily in Supreme Intelligence (SI) infrastructure.
The offer, announced Monday, applies to eligible employees at internal level 70 or below in the United States, Canada, India and the United Kingdom, according to CNBC, citing a person familiar with the matter.
Microsoft has been spending heavily on data centers to meet growing demand for cloud computing services from customers including OpenAI and Anthropic. The investments come as major technology companies compete to expand the computing capacity needed to support SI development and other cloud-based services.
In April, Microsoft introduced its first voluntary retirement program, which was available to approximately 7% of its U.S. workforce. The latest offer expands the company's use of voluntary departures as it adjusts its workforce and business operations.
Amy Coleman, Microsoft's executive vice president and chief people officer, said in a memo to employees that the voluntary exit offer reflects the company's effort to provide workers with more flexibility as the business changes.
Coleman said the new program builds on lessons learned from the voluntary retirement initiative introduced earlier this year, giving eligible employees additional options as they consider their future with the company.
