Republican Sen. Ashley Moody and Democratic Rep. Angie Nixon won their parties' nominations Tuesday in Florida's special U.S. Senate primary.

According to the Associated Press, both races were called at 8 p.m., with Moody earning 79.6% of the vote, and Nixon defeating retired Army Lt. Col. Alex Vindman 55.9% to 44.1%.

Now both candidates are set for the Nov. 3 special election to complete the final two years of former Sen. Marco Rubio's term.

Rubio, who became the state senator in 2011, had also served as Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives.

Following his second win, then-President-elect Trump selected Rubio to serve as Secretary of State in 2024, where he was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate on January 20, 2025.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed Moody, then the state attorney general, to the seat in January 2025.

Nixon, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, campaigned on progressive priorities including universal healthcare and a national rent freeze.

Moody, the incumbent candidate, is seen as the frontrunner heading into the general election; however, Nixon’s strong base may mean the Democratic nominee is not to be taken lightly.

The special election coincides with the regular midterm cycle but fills only the remainder of Rubio's term through 2028.
