A shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, left multiple people injured Thursday afternoon, including children, prompting a major law enforcement response and the evacuation of students and staff. Authorities confirmed the suspected shooter was killed inside the school, but investigators had not determined who fired the fatal shot.

Bend Police Department Communications Manager Sheila Miller said dispatchers received a call at approximately 12:59 p.m. local time reporting that someone had fired a shot into a vehicle near the school. Additional 911 calls soon reported an active shooter inside the building.

Police issued an emergency alert at approximately 1 p.m., and officers arrived around two minutes later. A radio transmission shortly afterward indicated that the suspect was down.

“It was one shooter. That suspect is deceased,” Miller said during a briefing.

Authorities had not identified the suspect or established whether a police officer or another person fired the fatal shot. Miller said a bystander may have been responsible.

Police confirmed that children were among the victims but had not released a total number of people injured. At least two people were transported to St. Charles Hospital, though their conditions were not immediately available.

Hundreds of law enforcement officers, firefighters, and other emergency personnel responded to the scene. Officers began moving through the school room by room to evacuate students and staff while authorities worked to secure the building.

Bend-La Pine Schools placed Silver Rail Elementary on lockdown as the emergency unfolded. The school serves students from kindergarten through fifth grade and had 459 enrolled students as of the previous year, according to the Oregon Department of Education. Police said approximately 400 to 450 children attend the school, which has more than 40 staff members.

Authorities established a family reunification site at Journey Church, located at 61303 South Highway 97 near Goodwill and Dairy Queen, where families were directed to meet evacuated students. Officials urged the public to avoid the school while emergency crews continued their response.

“This is the kind of thing we never want to see happen in Bend. It’s devastating,” Miller said.

Investigators had not released further details about the shooting, including the suspect’s identity, the circumstances surrounding the attack, or the full extent of the victims’ injuries.
