Peter Cullen will deliver his final original performance as Optimus Prime in Optimus Prime: Awakening, a new 12-minute animated short from Hasbro described as a “love letter” to the Transformers community and the longtime voice actor.

The short will screen following select showings of the 1986 animated film The Transformers: The Movie as part of its 40th anniversary re-release. The original movie will return to theaters from Sept. 17 through Sept. 22 in a special 4K presentation.

Cullen, who originated the voice of Optimus Prime in the original Transformers series, recorded the performance before his death at age 85. The new short marks his final original recording as the iconic Autobot leader.

Frank Welker, who voiced Megatron and Soundwave alongside Cullen for decades, also returns for the short. Welker described working with Cullen on the project as a “real gift,” saying his friend’s voice, heart, and values will remain part of Optimus Prime.

Optimus Prime: Awakening builds on the visual style and storytelling of the 1986 film while offering fans a new story featuring two of the franchise’s most recognizable characters.

The anniversary screenings will allow longtime fans to see the classic film on the big screen again while hearing Cullen portray Optimus Prime one final time.
