President Donald J. Trump announced on Truth Social that a productive morning call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi produced an immediate trade agreement under which India will stop buying Russian oil, sharply increase imports from the United States, and eliminate tariffs and non-tariff barriers on U.S. goods in exchange for the U.S. lowering its reciprocal tariff on Indian imports from 25% to 18%. Trump praised Modi as a “Powerful and Respected Leader” and one of his “greatest friends,” saying the deal will help starve Russia’s war effort in Ukraine while boosting American energy dominance, manufacturing, and jobs. He highlighted Modi’s commitment to “BUY AMERICAN,” including more than $500 billion in U.S. energy, technology, agricultural products, coal, and other goods, and said the agreement advances America First priorities by growing the economy, promoting MADE IN THE U.S.A., and reducing reliance on Russian oil.
The President highlighted the personal rapport: “Prime Minister Modi and I are two people that GET THINGS DONE, something that cannot be said for most.” He tied the trade shift directly to ending the Russia-Ukraine war by depriving Moscow of oil revenue, calling it a concrete step toward peace through economic pressure.
President Trump concluded: “Our amazing relationship with India will be even stronger going forward. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
